Cross Country

St Mary's students continue to be successful in this event regularly achieving Regional competition level. The cross-country event is a sanctioned event conducted under the rules and regulations of School Sports Victoria. The district qualification event, held in the month of May of each year, is sponsored by the Altona District School Sports Association (ADSSA). It is held on the parklands of Cherry Lake, Altona.

The 8, 9 and 10 year ols compete a 2km course whereas the 11 and 12 year ols complete a 3km course. All students from Grades 3-6 are given an invitation to trial for the cross country team. This is generally held in early Term 1 to enable interested runners to prepare for it. All relevant information is provided to the students in a meeting called by the school's Physical Education Teacher (P.E. Teacher). The purpose of the training seesions are to improve the runners cardiovascular fitness and understanding of how to compete in a long distance event. Students then trial for a position in the team. All sessions are held at Robertson Reserve (across the road from the school).

ADSSA regulates there are four representative positions for each gender available at each age group level. In recent years the venue for the District Carnival is Cherry Lake, Altona. From here, those students who come 1st - 10th in their age group and meet the ADSSA qualification standard then progress to the Divisional competition as a St Mary's representative. School Sport Victoria then host Regionals in which successful Divisional runners are invited to attend. Regionals are usually held at Brimbank Park, Keilor East. The State Cross Country level is the final achievement for those runners who have progressed through all previous competitions. St Mary's has had students achieve State and even National level participation. The cross country team show a high level of committment and determination every year.
