Health and Physical Education

The students at St. Mary’s, Williamstown have a designated Physical Education lesson each week.
Prep students are introduced to ball familiarization skills including different throwing and catching techniques, small group co-operation activities and coordination skills such as jumping and skipping.

Students in Years 1 and 2 have the opportunity to experience and consolidate the basic techniques used in many sporting and physical activities. These activities include skill work and lead up activities particularly needed in “ball handling” situations. Skills such as: throwing, catching, rolling, stopping and dribbling (hand and foot) are all emphasized in these earlier years.

In Years 3 and 4, students are introduced to the equipment utilized in many traditional sports with lead up games and fun activities undertaken to promote experience with often ‘unfamiliar” equipment and terminology.
Year 5 and 6 students are exposed to a wide variety of different sports and many of the skills associated with them, including the WOW Beach Program during Term 1. Year 5 and 6 students can also participate in the Inter-School Winter Sports Teams (Soccer, AFL Football, Netball and Softball) during Term 2.
Students from Years 1-6 are involved in the Sporting School Program. This program provides funding to the school and allows the students to be coached by highly qualified Victorian coaches in a chosen sport within their Physical Education lessons.

The School is associated with the ADSSA (Altona District School Sports Association) group and students from Years 3 -6 have the opportunity to compete and represent the School in swimming, athletics, cross country and sofcrosse.

Other activities the School is involved in includes: The Jogathon, the St. Mary’s Athletics Carnival in which all students in the School participate, AFL Football day and lunchtime sport clinics hosted by the Sport Captains.
Students are introduced to local sporting clubs and coaches through the Sporting Schools Program. All students are encouraged to participate in sports that support the local community and surrounding sporting clubs.
